Top Keywords for the Cayman Islands 2023

As a local business operating in the Cayman Islands, there are crucial aspects you must understand about your online presence. Drawing from my experience as an SEO professional with nearly 15 years of expertise, here are some valuable recommendations: Identify Your Online Competitors: It's essential to be aware of who your online competitors are. Your offline competitors may not necessarily be your online rivals, although there's a significant likelihood that they could be. It's worth noting that newer businesses tend to embrace online visibility and search engine optimization more rapidly than established businesses that have traditionally relied on cruise ship tourism for many years. So, how do you go about discovering your online competitors? The key is to understand what keywords are relevant to your business. Keywords are the terms and phrases that potential customers use when searching for your products or services. For instance, if your business operates in the tour...

Write content that is valuable for Search Engines & Users

Write content for Search Engines and Users For the past few years I have been going on and on about writing new content as regularly as possible.  I have seen quite a few of our clients do so diligently and I appreciate that but there is one thing that is starting to become clear:  writing content that is valuable to both Search Engine and Users is paramount if you want to maintain your Search Engine position and perhaps even to increase your online visibility.  Below here are my suggestions when writing your next blog. Your objective everytime you write a new blog should be: will Users like and/or share this information? Content that is Valuable to Search Engines  Google, Bing and all the other search engines have spiders / crawlers / bots that frequently index your website.  The more often your website has new content is a signal that you are frequently updating your website with new information and this is an important signal to them.  A few y...

Understanding the Ranking Algorithm of Google

So I've been in the Internet Marketing / Search Engine Optimization Industry for well over 10 years now and the landscape has changed so much.  In the beginning all website developers had to do was punch in a few keywords, put in proper titles, ask other websites to link back and essentially that was it.  You would be able to rank just by doing those 3 things.  Now, SEO no longer Childs play.  Google changed and updated its technology and recently launched RankBrain . RankBrain, like its name sake, is the AI (artificial intelligence) behind the ranking mechanism of Google. Its machine learning so its actually teaching itself instead of following a command prompt created by humans.  Thats pretty far out.  Please note though that RankBrain is not an Algorithm.  It is instead a "sorting hat" designed to scan the billions of websites and rank them according to the algorithm requirements.  Essentially RankBrain works as part of the algorithm.  G...

Be Mobile-Friendly or Lose Rank and Traffic!

So if you haven't already heard, today is the launch of Google's Mobile Algorithm .  Everyone in the Search Engine Marketing Industry and News Industry are talking about it.  They are calling it MOBILEGEDDON, which to me doesn't seem like the perfect name for it because "Armaggeddon" means "the final battle between good and evil" -- essentially there is no clear winner yet. As opposed to this new Mobile Algorithm that Google is implementing today, which is a clear sign that Mobile is winning! Mobile-Friendly Testing Tool  How do you know your website needs this mobile algorithm?  Google has provided a tool called the Mobile-Friendly Test .    Go ahead and test your website.  And if you see something like Image 1 then you might want to check how many people access your website using their mobile phones. Image 1: Not Mobile-Friendly Message using Google's Testing Tool If you are in the Tourism industry, I am advising you to hurry up and...

Search Funnels for the Cayman Islands

When doing research using a Search Engine a user will search using multiple keyword searches, not just one.  The research starts with a broad range keyword and ends with a more long-tailed and defined key phrase. Example of a search funnel:  A woman looking for a bag. Research will start with:  "bags"  ---> "luxury bags" ---> "black luxury bags" ---> "black luxury bag louis vuitton"  ---> "black luxury bag louis vuitton 2012 model" The search funnel ends with "black luxury bag louis vuitton 2012 model"  and thats the conversion keyword. But that doesn't mean the other keywords in the funnel were useless.  On the contrary there are always opportunities along the search funnel. Search Funnels determine what keywords were used in finding a service or product; which keyword was first used and which keyword was ultimately used in converting that User into a Customer. Understanding the hierarchy of the keywor...

We does not accept hourly SEO rates

I recently received an email about a prospective client inquiring about our SEO services.  They were recommended by other folks in the business community in Grand Cayman who knew of our services. I proceeded to explain what needed to be done and since they built their website using flash, I had to explain that we needed to re-do their entire website. She writes back informing me that she doesn't want to rebuild her new website but just wants SEO services. She particularly wanted me to put in her title tags and wanted to know how much I charged per hour. I didn't reply anymore because I've gotten a few of these emails in the past.  When I was new in this business, I would reply to every single email.  In order for me to explain why I needed to do things, I was writing novels.  I would waste entire days just replying to questions and trying to make prospective customers understand what i needed to be doing. For the record:  Easywebsites DOES NOT accept hourl...

SEO's Changed Forever

Thank you Olivia for this pic Google announced the Hummingbird Algorithm in mid-September on their 15th birthday in the same garage where Google was born.  Search Engine Land had a live blog following that event.  Other notable blogs that discuss the new algorithm are... Search Engine Watch, " Why Hummingbird isn't for the birds " Wired, " Where no search has gone before "  and last but certainly not least, Copyblogger, " Good news for serious content creators " The list above will give you a good idea of what Hummingbird is about and what changes to expect in Search for the rest of 2013.  I seriously don't think we will have another Algorithm update for the rest of the year, or atleast thats what I'm hoping.

SEO is now Social

I can't believe its already August of 2013.  On January of this year, I remember worrying about the newly released Penguin algorithm (aka Panda Update on January 22, 2013) and how it would affect my sites.  And now, its already August and I'm worrying about another Penguin release (aka Panda Recover released last July 18, 2013).  Ah, such is the cycle of an SEO's life.  Sleep is for the weak! If you are an SEO professional then you already know of these updates.  If you are a client and would like to know what you can do to increase your rankings in the new era of SEO here are a few things to remember... Social Media - you better be doing this regularly because its now a central part of Optimization. Without Social Media tickers, Search Engine robots are not going to trust your website as much. Blogging - not yet blogging?  Ok, thats why you are not getting any inquiries.  Stop asking your developer to make changes to your website and start as...

Small Business Expo of the Department of Commerce and Investment

Fevi's Seminar for the Small Business Expo The Small Business Expo by the Cayman Islands Department of Commerce and Investment (DCI) was a very successful event and I am so happy to have been part of it.  Big thanks go out to the people behind it especially Donnovan Kellyman and Charmaine Moss who invited me to speak at the event. The title of my talk was, " Social Media Plus " and if you click on that you will see my slide show.  I had a very interesting talk as the range of people who attended went from beginners to advance.  Please check out my slides and if you have any questions, pls don't hesitate to contact me @feviyu on Twitter.

Small Business Expo by the Dept. of Commerce and Investment

I love the initiative of the Cayman Islands Department of Commerce and Industry (DCI) on having a Small Business Expo .  More than ever, I strongly believe that Small Business owners need Governments assistance in getting through these difficult times. We are classified as a Small Business so networking with other small businesses is a great opportunity.  Plus because we dont have a "department" for everything and that one person does a lot (most) of the work, a lot of times, we rely on our background knowledge on how to do things like hire people, do financials, trying to get investors,  figuring out the best insurance, business staffing, social media, etc. and most of the time, its not always 100% but we make do with it because there are pressing matters at hand.  The reality is not all business owners (Including me) know 100% of everything so this is an awesome opportunity. Like most Small Business owners, our focus lies in meeting Client expectations and ens...

Happy New Year and Hello Google Panda!

Every January I never hold my breath because Google always does something huge .  This 2013 I'm glad I was prepared for the big 'thing' because Google has just updated their Panda Algorithm.  I can almost hear the moans and the questions, 'say wha?, wasn't the latest one called Penguin?' The Penguin Algorithm Yes the latest algorithm launched in early 2012 is called Penguin and this algorithm checked websites for quality content.  What is quality content?  Let's put it this way, if you are too lazy to provide well written and well thought out content for your website, it is highly unlikely that your website is on the first page of anything.  But if you took the time to really think about how you want your products/services and company presented then your website is probably effective and earning its keep. Because we develop websites against algorithms I was actually able to see just how effective a quality content site ranked compared to a website with ...

SEO Endorsements on LinkedIn

I just want to say a personal thank you to all my clients who have endorsed my work on Linkedin. One of the most rewarding things in my line of work is when clients show their appreciation by providing you with a testimonial , either written or video . In as much as I know what I am good at, its great to see the affirmation from the business community that I am involved in.  So from the bottom of my heart, thank you so much. Easywebsites has been operating in the Cayman Islands for the last 4 years and in that duration, we have never had to do any elaborate marketing campaign.  During our first year of operations I remember paying for ads on "Whats Hot" because I wanted to educate the readership on SEO. But that is the extent of advertising we have done.  Through the last four (4) years our small company has grown from 1 employee to a total of 15 with two (2) offices: Main office is the Cayman Islands and our Satellite office in Eastwood Cyber City, Metro Manila, ...

Losing a number #1 position on Google

I was one of the presenters for the Arts Cayman photography contests and when I was there I touted my website as no. 1 in Google for "cayman photographer" - sadly I no longer have this position on the Search Engine giant.  Google Penguin was launched between then and now. I haven't updated my personal photography website, www.fevisyu.com for atleast two going on three years now and since the last two years have seen the launch of two major algorithms (Google Panda and Google Penguin), my website has suffered from not being updated.  I also haven't updated any content (text) or photos for it so seemingly - my website is comparable to New York during the wrath of Hurricane Sandy - a ghost town. Currently, my personal photography website is no. 5 in the Cayman Islands for "cayman photographer" - see screen capture below: Dropped SERPs on Google because of the Panda and the Penguin  So many of you might be asking, why I dropped rank but the more learne...

Celebrating Ada Lovelace

Celebrating Ada Lovelace day in the Easywebsites Philippines Office A celebration of women in science, technology, engineering and math happened this week so we celebrated this in the Philippine office by providing a free lunch to our women developers on Ada Lovelace day.  The guys got muffins! When we started our operations in the Philippines over four years ago, I remember, we didn't have any women developers.  Its been four years since and now half of our development team are women and thriving. Anyway, we hope that women in technology all over the world celebrated this momentous occasion and we hope that more and more organizations (big and small) decide to hire women in their workforce.

Radio Cayman presents SEO Basics with guest Fevi Yu

I was recently a guest of Business Buzz in Radio Cayman.  Business Buzz is presented by the Cayman Islands Department of Commerce and Investment and is an hour long show every Tuesday and Thursday from 7.30am to 9am. Atty. Richard Barton is the host of the show and he led a very interesting discussion on basic Search Engine Optimization and what small businesses have to be aware of when they are going online.   Here is the entire hour long radio show.  Big thanks to Lesley-Ann Thompson who is the Head of Marketing for the DCI who invited me and provided the audio of the show. Here is the entire audio transcript which I uploaded to youtube.com and inserted photos. Please note that this is the entire radio show so the video is over an hour long.

Why we are a better Web design and Internet Marketing Company

Easy Websites is the name of our web design and internet marketing company and we have been in business for the last 4 years in the Cayman Islands. Not just Web Development After our first year of business, we started integrating search engine friendliness into the development process of the websites we created.  The results speak for themselves.  As soon as we launched a website with a fairly decent domain age, it would appear on the first page of their keyword. Click to Enlarge   A prime example is the Wharf's website.  When we took over this website, it was invisible on google for its major keywords and was only appearing for searches for "the Wharf Cayman" - within a month of launch it started on the bottom of the page and has now inched a mid level result on the first page.   This website now appears on the first page of both "cayman restaurant" and "cayman restaurants" - two keywords that net over 4,000 searches per month. It also appe...

Cayman SEO: The Food Games vs. The Hunger Games

The Food Games Poster I am about to write a book called, The Food Games.  (Will possibly get The Food Network to 'Sponsor')  This is a story about the future of humanity.  Sometime in the future, the US is going to be divided into 12 districts.  It will probably come about because of some stupid war.  Each district represents a race.  ie. district 11 is all black, district  8 is all asians (because I'm asian and my favorite number is 8).  There will be two representatives from each district that will be picked randomly.  Of course, unlike the Hunger Games, everyone will want to volunteer because its an eat all you can contest. Anyway the plot line is that the Asian girl from district 8 out-eats all the other participants.  Everyone is surprised because she's so skinny.  There will be a short flashback to a part of her childhood when she was a voracious eater.  That should explain her awesome eating skills. And that is en...

Welcome the "King of Facebook"

Nick Pitman Joins Us For some time now, I have felt that it wasn't enough to just build websites.  I knew so much more had to be done in order to fill the large online void that everyone seems to be feeling with the advent of Social Media. My problem was/is that human cloning wasn't a viable option.  I just didn't have the time to go into Social Media myself and bridge that gap.  If I did that, I don't think I would be able to provide the same value to my clients in SEO and Web Design as I would be spreading myself too thinly. When Google and Bing both integrated social signals into the Search Algorithm,  I knew I could no longer wait.  It was no longer a 'perceived' void but one that was very real.  Social Media was here to stay and traditional marketing would be the next dinosaur. A few months ago, I was talking to a friend and was ranting about the amount of work that I had to do.  She recommended that I talk to Nick Pitman.  He was ...
